The newest film on this list premiered on Netflix on August 28, 2026. James Ashcroft directs this adaptation of Alex North’s 2019 thriller, in which a widowed novelist and his young son move to a town where police are investigating child abductions that may link back to a convicted serial killer known as the Whisper Man. When the boy is taken, the writer turns to his estranged father, the retired detective who caught the original killer. Robert De Niro, Adam Scott, Michelle Monaghan and Michael Keaton star.
Fear Street: Prom Queen (2025)
Netflix returned to R. L. Stine’s book series in May 2025 with this standalone slasher from director Matt Palmer. It is 1988 at Shadyside High, and a masked killer is picking off the candidates for prom queen on the night of the dance. India Fowler leads a cast that includes Katherine Waterston, Lili Taylor and Chris Klein.
Hush (2016)
Mike Flanagan directed and co-wrote this lean home-invasion film with its star, Kate Siegel. She plays a deaf and mute horror author living alone in the woods who is targeted by a masked man (John Gallagher Jr.). After a premiere at South by Southwest, it was released on Netflix on April 8, 2016, and it is on Netflix’s list of titles added on October 1, 2026.
Gerald’s Game (2017)
Mike Flanagan directed this adaptation of Stephen King’s 1992 novel, released on Netflix on September 29, 2017. Carla Gugino plays a woman left handcuffed to a bed in an isolated lake house after her husband (Bruce Greenwood) dies suddenly, and the film follows her attempts to escape while old memories resurface. The Sixth Sense (1999)
M. Night Shyamalan’s ghost story stars Bruce Willis as a child psychologist treating a troubled boy (Haley Joel Osment) who says he can see dead people. The film earned six Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture and nods for Osment and Toni Collette. It is rated PG-13.
Evil Dead (2013)

The Strangers (2008)
Bryan Bertino wrote and directed this home-invasion film, released in theaters on May 30, 2008. Ouija: Origin of Evil (2016)
Another Mike Flanagan film, this prequel to 2014’s Ouija is set in 1960s Los Angeles. Steven Brill directed, and the cast includes Kevin James, Julie Bowen, Ray Liotta, Steve Buscemi and June Squibb. It was released on Netflix on October 7, 2020.
The Curse of Bridge Hollow (2022)
Marlon Wayans and Priah Ferguson play a father and daughter who move to a town obsessed with Halloween. After the daughter lights a mysterious lantern, a spirit called Stingy Jack makes the town’s decorations come to life. Jeff Wadlow directed, and the film was released on Netflix on October 14, 2022.
We Have a Ghost (2023)
Christopher Landon’s comedy, based on Geoff Manaugh’s short story “Ernest,” stars David Harbour as a ghost found in a family’s attic.
