“I liked the premise of the bizarre love triangle at the heart of the movie, but it gets way too sentimental for me by the end of it. It was hard to believe Mel Gibson's character is this hardened drug dealer, but at the same time he's this shy, lovesick dude willing to throw it all away for Michelle Pfeiffer. Kurt Russel was okay, but he doesn't seem to know what the fuck he's doing in this movie. One minute he's the loyal quasi-corrupt friend of Mel Gibson, the next he's the dutiful cop willing to throw him under a bus, then he's a loyal friend again. Raul Julia is the best thing about this movie; he stole every scene he was in. Raul Julia was awesome, too bad he died and had to suffer the ignominy of having Street Fighter as his last movie. The movie wasn't noir enough for me; it ends too neatly, and happily. It had potential to have horribly fucked up things happen to everyone and it dodges that more interesting route in order to go for the more Hollywood happy ending.”
