Harry Sanborn (Jack Nicholson) is an executive who works in the music business and who is dating Marin (Amanda Peet), who is old enough to be his daughter. Marin and Harry decide to go to the beach house of her mother, Erica (Diane Keaton), to visit her. There Harry suffers a cardiac arrest, being under the care of Erica and Julian (Keanu Reeves), a young local doctor.
