A ventriloquist/magician "Corky" Withers (Anthony Hopkins) on the verge of a nervous breakdown after a flubbed performance is told by his manager Ben Greene (Burgess Meredith) to take a short vacation from the grind of his nightly magic act. While recuperating he begins to fall in love with Peggy (Ann-Margret) the woman who owns the boarding house in which he is staying (and a former high school crush). Things go awry when the doll "Fats" used in the magic act begins to assert control over the fragile psyche of his master. The unexplained murders of both Corky's manager and a former love rival (who happens to be married to Peggy) appear to substantiate Corky's lost grip on reality, and yet there is still doubt of his guilt.
