Orientations are specific set of thoughts, emotions and actions we are naturally pre-disposed to. Our inherent orientations drive our behaviour. Those which impact leadership are leadership orientations. Thought and Emotions acted out externally or reflected internally is ‘behaviour’. Leadership orientations shape our leadership abilities, which when played out in a leadership context create a leadership outcome. Leadership context dictates the appropriateness of an orientation played out.

Trust

Trust is an emotion, not a thought or an action. It is what we evoke in others. People who associate with us are impacted by our behaviour (thoughts, emotions and actions). Trust that people give us is like currency.

Power

Power is a motive. Power is the force that provides energy to leadership. Ambiguity with respect to power hinders exercise of leadership. Power is internal to you and exists in all. Authority is devolved to you by others. Power is the engine of the leadership automobile.

Thinking

Thought and ambition drive vision and comprehension. There can be no action without thought. Productive achievement is possible in the presence of deductive and inductive logical thinking. Human thinking our short cut to comprehension and action. It is our non-verbal mental experimentation.

Closure

Leadership generates outcomes or achievements when thoughts and emotions direct action towards closure. Leadership without results fails to qualify as leadership. Trust, Power and Thinking translate into value creating leadership when present with Closure.

Ambition

Ambition is the fuel that powers the leadership engine. People with ambition seek contexts to exercise leadership of some kind. Ambition is personal. Ambition may be pure and undeterred, tempered or limited.

Interpersonal Dynamics

This profiler focuses on tendency to be comfortable, confident, interactive and influential in a group context and, ability to sense others moods, emotions, preferences and thoughts. Leadership without stature struggles to challenge status quo or drive change.

Leadership is leveraging resources, providing direction, solving complex problems, shaping the future and making decisions. Learning and nurturance are the fuel to the leadership engine. Orientation for your own learning drives your orientation for nurturance.

Risk Appetite

Risk is neither loss nor gain, opportunity nor threat, success nor failure. Uncertainty and ambiguity characterises risk. Risk appetite is your orientation to dealing with uncertainty and ambiguity. Risk appetite is commitment of your resources.
